Artist: Emily Blincoe
Personal Background
Emily Blincoe was born in Austin, Texas on September 2, 1980. She became a photographer at the age of 22, when her brother brought her a film camera and showed her how to use it in the darkroom. She eventually gained a following on Instagram and turned her side- line hobby into a full blown career in 2013, when she signed on with an agency. Some of her clients now include Target, Mercedes, GAP, and many others. She takes her ideas of photography from her travels and adventures. Much of her work centers around color, natural light and includes various objects from candies to plants. She has a dog, that she includes in her pictures and takes on her adventures.
Style
Emily Blincoe finds inspiration in shapes, colors, light, and quiet moments. Some things that remain the same for Blincoe are color, faces, little moments, light and finding beauty in the ordinary. Color has always played a big role in the pictures that she takes- from the colors in nature, food and fabrics- to the coloring in the editing process. She believes that beauty is in everyone. The most meaningful images she feels she has created are ones of her family. She believes that people are always changing, growing, and moving along. She enjoys capturing those images. She believes a photo holds a place in time that can always be looked back upon. That is the reason she began taking pictures.
Philosophy
Emily Blincoe’s pictures are personal in nature, and are for her own and others’ enjoyment. What started out as a personal hobby began making money for her as she launched her photography on Instagram. Her pictures portray her love of nature, color, and order. She tries to keep important moments of her and others lives, so that people, places, and ideas can be remembered. She has used social media to express her artwork and further a career for herself.
Influences
I appreciate the photographer’s love of nature and natural subject matter. Her pictures made me look at nature in a different way. Her use of colors and shapes made me look for similar colors even though the seasons were different. I used similar arrangements and similar materials to shape the photos like hers. I like my photos resemblances to hers. I found her work to be challenging, yet satisfying to try to imitate.

Compare and Contrast
For the first set of pictures, in which the leaves are surrounding the face and hair, I arranged the leaves around the head in a similar manner to the original picture. I found it challenging to create similar conditions, but I feel I was very successful in doing so. I chose the same clothing to represent my picture and it created a light, airy feeling. The differences could be found in the color of the backgrounds. The hair color is a little bit different, and my hair is thicker. In my picture, the leaves are a lighter green, which gives a greater contrast of color to my hair. My mother took this picture, and we found this to be my best photograph, which I thought turned out very well. We made several attempts before we got this one because a shadow was cast due to the lighting of the room. I am very satisfied with the outcome.
In the second set of pictures of leaves, the similarities can be found in the colors of the leaves. The colors range from bright green to dark green, and those with yellow tones. In contrast, my picture has larger leaves, which I thought made a beautiful variety. I arranged them further apart since I had larger leaves to work with. Some of my leaves are orange as a result of the fall season. I made several attempts to arrange them in order to get a similar picture. The two pictures are as closely alike as possible. I appreciate the likenesses and differences in these two photographs.
For my third set of pictures, I included an assortment of evergreen branches which I cut into pieces to create a similarity to the artist’s photograph. I found a variety of shapes that I liked. I looked at many trees to find the perfect branches. I took a lot of care to arrange them in a similar order to the original photograph. I took several pictures until I got my best shot, which was this picture. In contrast to the white background of the artist, I was able to use a cream colored background, which gave a different contrast. Some of the branches I used were shaped differently than the original, but I felt my picture showed as much variety as the original picture. I was pleased with my success in creating a likeness to the artist’s picture.

Personal Artist Statement
My images represent the theme of nature. Beauty can be found in natural elements and be compared to the beauty of humanity. The pictures represent calmness and the relaxation that nature provides. In the first set of pictures, the calmness of the face can be compared to calming effects of nature. These pictures make me feel peaceful.
